O'Neil she was in her high-school year when she took part in the auditions, tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol within the early months of 2005. Judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 round. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. But she lost badly in the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd they believed that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil, who had been consistently delivering stellar performances since then, never finished lower than the top three. Judge Werner predicted, after two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would be the winner of the Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and youngest in show history, following the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
