O'Grady grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, she graduated from the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. Her parents raised her within Wheaton (Illinois) and she graduated in 1981 from Wheaton's North High School. She appeared in a few commercials prior to making the move to Los Angeles in 1986. Her career O'Grady began her career as the model of Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring part in ABC drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest and appeared on independent movies and television shows. Donna Abandando played her first lead role in ABC's NYPD Blue, a police drama. O'Grady was the team's big-haired secretary of ABC's NYPD Blue between 1993 to the year 1996. Every year, she earned Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actor in the Drama Series.
